Reduce waste

In the UK, we produce enough waste to fill the Albert Hall every two hours [1] and most of this will end up in landfill sites. Biodegradable waste, such as food and garden waste, breaks down to produces methane, which is a powerful green house gas and therefore contributes to climate change. Because air is involved in home composting, the breakdown process does not produce methane, as it does in landfill.

The recycling process consumes less energy - and therefore produces less carbon - than the extraction and processing of new raw materials. The amount we recycled in the UK last year saved the same amount of carbon as taking 5 million cars off the road.

Household waste has an impact on climate change. By recycling more, preventing waste food and composting at home you can do your bit to help reduce this impact. In partnership with WRAP we have prepared some top tips on household waste reduction to help you shrink your carbon footprint.
